I have always loved art from a young age. Growing up I’ve visited different art galleries and art shows. There were school classes that really peaked my interest, mainly art classes and applied graphics arts. I remember making movie posters, playing with code, and working with Adobe Photoshop. Working with clay, watercolours, and spraypaint. But my guilty pleasure is fashion design, or fabric art I sometimes like to call it. The way the tailors could work their medium in different ways to create fun and out of this world looks was inspiring. I also enjoyed looking at magazines to see the fashion, as well as judge the layout of the content haha, “was that the right font choice?” I truly love the magical aspect of art and design. We can create clothes and art pieces that make us look and feel like something from a story!
I use to work for the public school system as a Special Needs Educational Assistant for almost 10 years, but I felt like I could do more, for myself and others. I was able to help create worksheets and coloring pages for teachers themed lessons. Learning how to create worksheets challenged my design skills. It can’t look too messy, it also couldn’t be too simple, goldilocks effect. I went back to school to learn programming languages (computer language) and design. I wanted to create websites that could help teachers and children with special needs because I got to observe and analyze everyone’s needs. I kept coming up with ideas that I couldn’t follow through because I didn’t have strong coding skills.
Most of my background in art and design is self-taught. I’ve been working with digital art through Adobe applications for close to 20 years. I learned the art basics from public school. I also took art classes after highschool because I wanted to continue to improve my art and design skills. I also took a few classes at NAIT (northern Alberta institute of technology) that taught me more about the computer world and their computer languages.
My creative process consists of a lot of design research. I research digital designs and physical designs. Art galleries, magazines, posters, graphic novels, movies. Pinterest, google, reddit, video games, and websites that talk about design. If I can see it, I want to look at it!
